Garden city movement hailed as enduring planning blueprint

The garden city remains an ideal blueprint of how urban planning
should proceed, it has been argued.
In a policy advice note the Town and Country Planning Association
(TCPA) has said the ideas of Ebenezer Howard in the 19th century
are still relevant today, with TCPA chief executive Gideon Amos
commenting: "Garden city settlements provide a rich and successful
testbed from history which remain successful and desirable."
Seeking to build on this foundation, the TCPA has said it is
working with English Heritage to explore ways of furthering this
legacy.
Such developments could help create more attractive new-build
developments as more homes are created.
The government has been warned by the Campaign to Protect Rural
England to take steps to ensure there is no upsurge in Greenfield
construction during the housing market dip.
Such locations are more desirable at such times because they are
cheaper to build on, the body noted.
